Jack Ma mysteriously vanished for months in the middle of the probe. Since then, his likeness has made very few photo/online appearances that "looked orchestrated" and tout "Rural Revitalization and Common Prosperity" to narrow the wealth gap, core tenets of President Xi's initiative
Since then, Alibaba (and other Chinese tech companies) has been known to be under Xi's control
In March 2023, the company announced it would reorganize into six business groups and other investments and follow a holding company model
In September 2023, under new CEO leadership, Alibaba has began simultaneously promoting younger people to senior management as well as transforming into an AI-based company, making this its most ambitious restructuring in its history (https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/alibaba-s-new-ceo-embraces-ai-and-wants-a-younger-management-team/ar-AA1gAV4s)
Eddie Wu, one of the student co-founders of Alibaba with his mentor Ma, is not only a veteran coder and Alibaba lifer since its inception, but also leads a $1.4 billion VC firm with a portfolio encompassing autonomous driving and Internet of Things
?️Looking forward, Alibaba’s two main strategic focuses will be ‘User First’ and ‘AI-driven,’. We will recalibrate our operations around these two core strategies and reshape our business priorities. Over the next decade, the most significant change agent will be the disruptions brought about by AI across all sectors. If we don’t keep up with the changes of the AI era, we will be displaced?️
- Eddie Wu, CEO
Alibaba is now focussed on promoting those born after 1985 to form “the core of its business management team” within the next four years and will reinforce its strategic investments in three areas: technology-driven internet platforms, AI-driven tech businesses and global commerce networks. It is now also adopting an open-source and collaborative relationship with companies that it traditionally has considered as competitors
On 12 September, Alibaba opened its AI model Tongyi Qianwen (https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/alibaba-opens-ai-model-tongyi-qianwen-public-2023-09-13/) to the public and OPPO, Taobao, DingTalk and Zhejiang University have already signed cooperation agreements to train their own large language models or develop language model applications based on it. Tongyi Qianwen, which is more advanced than either ChatGPT or GoogleBard because it can also "read and act" on images and answer multi-round questions in Chinese and English, will be integrated into all Alibaba business applications (https://cointelegraph.com/news/alibaba-launches-chat-gpt-like-ai-model-for-public-restrictions-china). An open source version of the LLM will become available for free commercial use "by the whole society" in the future
Their Cloud Intelligence Unit is also looking for up to $3.8 billion funding from state-backed telecom firms, which will increase their government cloud contracts, boost the use of Alibaba’s related services, and integrate virtually every phone user into their expansive AliPay network
Further, also in September, Ant Group (Alibaba affiliate and owner of AliPay) introduced a generative AIML model called “Smart Wealth” (Zhixiaobao) and a tool for financial professionals (Zhixiaozhu) to provide investors with wealth management advice, investment analysis, and insurance platforms
