Historical evolution of Bayer AG ?

Bayer AG, a global pharmaceutical and chemical conglomerate, traces its roots back to its founding in Barmen, Germany, in 1863 by Friedrich Bayer and Johann Friedrich Weskott. Initially, the company started as a small dye factory, producing synthetic dyes for textiles, marking the beginning of its journey into the world of chemicals. Bayer's early success in developing innovative dye products laid the foundation for its expansion into various chemical and pharmaceutical fields.

Bayer's Legacy of Innovation in Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals ℹ️

One of Bayer's pivotal moments came in 1897 when it introduced the pain reliever acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin. This groundbreaking medication quickly gained popularity, becoming one of the world's most widely used and recognizable pharmaceutical products. As Bayer continued to innovate, it entered into the production of other essential pharmaceuticals and chemicals, solidifying its position as a major player in the industry. Over the decades, Bayer has undergone significant transformations, diversifying its portfolio to encompass crop science, healthcare, and consumer health products. This pretty much explains the fact that this company generated almost $51.5 billion in 2023 according to latest financial reports.

Diversification and Innovation Across Industries ?

The company's ability to diversify into various sectors, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and agriculture, allowed it to weather economic challenges and changing market dynamics. Bayer's continued investment in research and development has yielded a stream of innovative solutions, addressing critical global issues such as healthcare and food security. Throughout its history, Bayer consistently demonstrated its capacity to identify emerging trends and invest in areas with tremendous profit potential. Notably, the acquisition of Monsanto in 2018 propelled Bayer into a prominent position in the agriculture sector, further diversifying its portfolio and expanding its global reach.

Glyphosate Controversy: The Battle Over Safety, Science, and Public Health ?

Monsanto, an acquisition made by Bayer, was mired in several controversies that garnered significant public attention and criticism. One of the most notable controversies was related to the production and marketing of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and herbicide-resistant crops, particularly the widely used herbicide glyphosate, branded as Roundup.

The controversy surrounding Roundup, has been one of the most prominent and contentious issues in the agricultural and chemical industries. This controversy primarily revolves around allegations that glyphosate exposure through Roundup is linked to an increased risk of cancer, particularly non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The conflict escalated when the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the World Health Organization, classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen in 2015. This classification prompted a surge in lawsuits against Monsanto (and later Bayer), filed by individuals who claimed that their exposure to Roundup had led to their cancer diagnoses. Notably, a few high-profile cases resulted in substantial legal judgments against the company, further fueling public concern and legal action. Eventhough, several goverments later proved that this product is safe, there is a perfect explanation. Monsanto is directly compromising our health by genetically modifying food and doing short-term tests that will show the products in a favorable light.

They are able to manipulate the system and bypass long-term tests that would show their products in a less than favorable light. Independent long-term tests show that their genetically modified foods are not safe and their GMO corn has been shown to increase the rates of cancer in laboratory tests.

Bayer's Profit Motive at a Grave Cost ‼️

The darkest chapter in Bayer's history is that the word HIV happens be associated with this big pharma company. During the mid 80’s the Bayer unit, Cutter Biological, developed a medicine called Factor 8. Bayer’s Factor 8 is a medicine that is injected into the bloodstream via syringe to treat people with hemophilia, a genetic disorder where the blood doesn’t clot normally. Bayer’s first version of the medicine was the “unheated” version of the medicine, which presented the risk of transmitting HIV to its users. The company supposedly "didn’t know" this version contained HIV when it was first made, but mounting evidence eventually made it impossible for Bayer to ignore the fact. Once Bayer become aware that there product was contaminated with HIV, Bayer later developed a safer “heated” version of the medicine which it sold in US and European markets. The heated version rendered the virus “undetectable.” That doesn’t mean that it still didn’t contain the virus, it only meant it couldn’t be detected.

Unveiling the tragic HIV Scandal ❌

The desire to earn money didn't stop the company to sell the infected products. The financial investment in the product was considered too high to destroy the inventory, therefore Bayer knowingly supplied hemophilia medication tainted with HIV to patients in Asia and Latin America, without the precaution of heat treating the product, recommended for eliminating the risk. As a consequence, thousands who infused the product tested positive for HIV and later developed AIDS. With the permision of FDA, Bayer sold this contaminated medicine to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan and Argentine. Bayer did make the safer heated version of the Bayer 8 medicine, which US and European markets were given access to and benefitted from, however some evidences show that even in this markets, in order to not lose money they continued to use up old stocks of the HIV contaminated unheated version of the product. It is painful to say how many people have suffered from such acts.
