The Origin

Colonel John Pemberton, wounded in the American Civil War and addicted to morphine, registered Pemberton's French Wine Coca nerve tonic in 1885. In 1886, during prohibition, Pemberton developed a nonalcoholic version his wine tonic, marketed it as "Coca-Cola: The temperance drink", and sold it as a patent medicine, claiming it could cure many diseases, including morphine addiction, indigestion, nerve disorders, headaches, and impotence

By 1888, 3 versions of Coke (sold by 3 separate businesses) were on the market:
- co-partnership between Pemberton and 4 Atlanta businessmen
- verbal statement given by Asa Candler claiming to have a stake in Pemberton's company as early as 1887
- an official "Coca-Cola" brand name that belonged to Pemberton's son Charley

When John Pemberton died suddenly in 1888, Candler took full control of the entire operation, despite rumors that bill of sale signatures had been forged. In 1892, Candler incorporated a second company, the Coca-Cola Company (current day corporation) and 2 years later Charley was found unconscious and died. Candler turned his $2300 investment into a $25 million sale to Trust Co (SunTrust) in 1919 and the rest is history
