The greatest web giants are coming to Mastodon and will be using their technology
- Evgeny Shuvalov, StellarVBRF
Mastodon is a free and open source software (FOSS) decentalized social media network for federated microblogging (similar to X), allowing anyone to contribute code to it and either run their own server or join other servers within the fediverse network. The service is interoperable with any other decentralized social networks or platforms that also use the ActivityPub protocol. Servers are connected as nodes in a network, and each server can administer its own rules, account privileges, and whether to share messages to and from other servers. Many servers have a theme based on a specific interest. It is also common for servers to be based around a particular locality, region, ethnicity, or country, although there are increasingly more global servers joining the network
Furthermore, because of their “Fediverse” structure, which is what creates their interconnected web of various social media services, Mastodon's decentralized platform is designed to be inclusive of everyone, instead of adopting the "Cancel Culture" that has arisen in centralized media organizations
Culture
Created by Russian-born German Eugen Rochko, Mastodon was announced on Hacker News in October 2016. Rochko originally developed it with crowdfunding through Patreon and OpenCollective, an open-source development grant from Samsung, plus a small grant from the European Commission. It is maintained by German non-profit Mastodon gGmbH, and the development continues to be crowdfunded, meaning that its goal is to benefit the public, rather than shareholders
It gained global traction in 2022 after Elon Musk accquired Twitter as well as a 2022 "Time Magagine" interview, in which Rochko famously stated his dissastisfaction with other social media companies, remarking that "a platform like Twitter plays an important role in democracy and should not be controlled by a US corporation"
While Mastodon has long been seen as a safe harbor for "alt-right" and "far-right" groups that "espouse fringe theories" such as Gab and Truth Social, in the future, all social media platforms -- no matter which side of the political fence they sit -- will be incorporated into Mastodon
Social Media Bridge
In 2023, the Mozilla Foundation contracted Cure53 to perform penetration testing on Mastodon's software, in preparation to bridge Mastodon with Mozilla's community. The testing discovered several vulnerabilities, most notably one called "TootRoot" which would have enabled arbitrary code execution and another that would have enabled cross-site scripting attacks through oEmbed cards
Arbitrary Code Execution (ACE): an attacker's ability to run any commands or code of the attacker's choice on a target machine or in a target process. ACE vulnerability is a security flaw in software or hardware that would allow arbitrary code execution to hijack any or all Mastodon nodes/servers
Cross-Site Scripting (XSS): security vulnerability that can be found in some web applications. XSS attacks enable attackers to inject client-side scripts into web pages viewed by other users and may be used by attackers to bypass access controls
oEmbed: an open source form that enables embedding content from a website into another page. For example, Twitter uses it to embed tweets into blog posts. Squarespace, WordPress, Drupal, and LinkedIn all happen to embed content using oEmbed
While these vulnerabilities were supposedly "patched" in July 2023 (https://arstechnica.com/security/2023/07/mastodon-fixes-critical-tootroot-vulnerability-allowing-node-hijacking/), QSFS Patriots know that this patch was actually a test to prepare the Mastodon's servers to allow "white hat hackers" to hijack all of their nodes/servers beginning in 2024 in order to "deplatform" disinformation and misinformation agents as well as to release declassifiied content to all users as part of the larger "global declas" operation
Ergo, Mastodon represents the hyperscaled ActivityPub protocol-based social platform behind Social Media Bridges
Deplatforming and Bots
Just like with white hats taking over blockchains, centralized crypto exchanges, and crypto wallets with their respective assets or organizations with their respective products and services to transmute dark to light, Mastodon will also use Sun Tzu's "Art of War" strategies to bring transparency and fairness to the entirety of global social media
A recent update allows existing users and their servers the ability to "switch servers" with an undisclosed cooldown period after, preventing them from frequently and/or continually switching servers. Because of this new feature, white hats will no longer need to close down millions of platforms and channels and blacklist those respective users. Instead, these disinformation and misinformation agents will be "deplatformed" simply because they will lose access to their own channels, be unable to post their own new content, and all of their old content will not be bridged into nor viewable on the new server. However, their membership or subscribers will remain with them on the new server, and therefore will be able to see the new server's content that is being automatically broadcasted "on behalf of" the server owner
For example, millions of subscribers of Disinformation Agent A or Misinformation Agent B will not need to manually follow a new server to receive declassified information. They may remain where they are, and the declassified information from the approved New Server will be automatically shared to Disinformation Agent A's and Misinformation Agent B's server via XSS and oEmbed while the server owner's personal accounts are shadowbanned and frozen due to failing ActivityStreams 2.0 data format and JSON-LD (JSON-Linked Data) (https://techcrunch.com/2023/05/02/mastodon-now-has-a-simpler-sign-up-process/) signature verification KYC because of "TootRoot" and ACE patches
Furthermore, RedHat's most recent October and November 2023 RHEL updates, which include FrozenDictionary and FrozenSet, are how bots and trolls will be systematically removed from the Mastodon Fediverse
ActivityPub
It’s a technology protocol through which social networks can be made interoperable, connecting everything to a single social graph and content-sharing system. It’s governed by open protocols, not closed platforms and its aim is to give control back to users and to make sure that the social web is bigger than any single company
Examples of other social network servers using the ActivityPub protocol's Fediverse as of November 2023 are:
- Telegram
- Discord
- Drupal
- Flipboard
- Gab
- Instagram
- LinkedIn
- Medium
- Mozilla
- Squarespace
- Threads (by Meta/Instagram)
- Trump's Truth Social
- Tumblr
- WordPress
- YouTube
Coming soon to ActivityPub:
- Bluesky (Jack Dorsey)
- Forgejo/Gitea (software dev hosting, bug tracking, code review, continuous integration)
- GitLab (DevOps)
- X.com (formerly Twitter)
After all NDAs are lifted, the remaining social media platforms that are not already on Mastodon will be joining the network, such as those primarily in Asian regions
In short, ActivityPub will help rewire the entire social fabric of the internet under white hat governance
